این تجهیز در گروه کلید های اتوماتیک که دسته ای از بریکر و قطع کننده مدار در سطح ولتاژی فشار ضعیف می باشد قرار دارد. به طور کلی کلیدهای هوایی زیمنس دو وظیفه اصلی یکی قطع و وصل کردن مدار(سوئیچ کردن) و وظیفه دیگر حفاظت از مداردر حالت اتصال کوتاه و یا اتصال زمین و یا نوسانات مورد استفاده قرار می گیرد.
دلیل این نامگذاری هم بخاطر نوع کنترل و اطفا آرک و یا جرقه حاصل از عملکرد کلید هست که چون در هوای آزاد صورت می گیرد به آن بریکر هوایی می گویند.
